Just a postscript. At almost the same time I was writing this, the New York Times published a similar piece ( http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/technology/personaltech/10basics.html?_r=1&em ). Just found out about it this weekend by a blog reader that is a religious Times reader. Maybe 5 years is too long for this trend to pan out. I believe the implications for advertising and mass communications are no less significant tan that of the introduction of the commercial internet in 1994. Comcast, with its purchase of NBC, is still a player -- not to mention their role as internet provider, although it is quickly getting challenged by 3G/4G technologies, similar to what cell phones are doing to landlines.
