I am fascinated by how the brain works! I have found that the more I understand how humans perceive, learn, and make memories that it opens new avenues to help organizations change behavior. Behavior is at the center of transformation - societal, organizational and personal transformation.
The TED discussion by Tom Wujec on 3 ways the brain creates meaning discusses ways we can tap into the brain's inherent ability to create mental models - ah ha moments - from cognition. Tom focuses on three areas of the brain that combine with the visual cortex. First the visual cortex captures and image and radiates the stream to:
- The Ventral Stream to recognize "what" something is
- The Dorsal Stream to locate the object in physical body space
- The Limbic System that gives you the feeling about what you see
Engaging and creating interactive imagery augments memory by creating visual persistence in the brain. Examples are provided, including reference to a set of images from PopTech2008 that convey the central ideas of several conference presentations.
Food for thought -- how can images, and interaction with images improve messages we convey?
