Well said and I also think IT is too important to businesses to get cuts but I don't think its a sacred cow.

I think alot of the advances in fields like virtualization, SaaS, etc are to try and streamline operations (which every business is trying to do) to cut unnecessary costs which may equate to IT staff.

I think IT departments at thriving companies are going to be recruiting, looking for talented people and the ones that are belt-tightening may be looking at three DBA's and wondering if they can live with two.
